CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR
WORLD CHAMPION NEIGHBOR! There has never in history been a boxer like him. Beating Antonio Margarito so conclusively in Texas, by the unanimous decision of 3 judges, brought Pacman the WBC World Super Welterweight title, and nobody has ever before been the World Champion in eight different weight divisions. What a phenomenal athlete, and what a tremendous inspiration he is to Filipinos around the globe. Pacquiao's sportsmanship was such that in the final two rounds of the match Pacquiao clearly eased up to avoid handing out excessive punishment to the bigger Mexican-American fighter, who was tough and brave but totally outclassed. We are very proud that Manny and his family have a home in one of our local premier subdivisions. (See lots of great stuff for Pacman fans on the Pacland website)

HOW SCIENCE IS TRANSFORMING NATIONS AND PEOPLE FASTER THAN SCIENCE FICTION WRITERS COULD EVER HAVE PREDICTED
"Our greatest natural resource is the minds of our children... All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them... The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing... It's kind of fun to do the impossible."
- Walt Disney
"What is an airplane after all but a circling of reality, an approach to gravity which says: Look, with my magic machine I defy you. Gravity, be gone. Distance, stand aside. Time, stand still, or reverse, as I finally outrace the sun around the world in, by God! look! plane/jet/rocket--80 minutes!" - Ray Bradbury, award-winning author of bestselling SF novels including 'Fahrenheit 451' and 'Dandelion Wine', several of which were produced as Hollywood box office blockbuster hit movies.
We all know that airplanes, submarines, space travel, cell phones, holograms, transplants, cloning, foods in tablet form and many other things were described in science fiction long before they became reality. Even present day security cameras and television's Big Brother show were spawned by the SF novel "1984" written by George Orwell and first published in 1949. New ideas and discoveries are now communicated so widely and rapidly in what is often dubbed the Information Age that scientific developments are overtaking fiction in the current real-life race to create a modern real-world utopian society. Youth Olympics Football
SINGAPORE'S TRAILBLAZING
2010 YOUTH OLYMPICS GAMES
ARE A WORLDWIDE SUCCESS BEYOND ALL EXPECTATIONS
A look back at this amazing event, the first ever, which was held in Singapore in August and won tumultuous international acclaim
The 2nd Youth Olympics will take place at Nanjing, China,
which will find the Singapore Games a hard act to follow
by Lin Xinyi
Not even International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge could ever have envisioned such a successful inaugural Games. As the 12-day sporting party drew to its climactic close, Rogge enthused that the first Youth Olympic Games had vastly exceeded his highest expectations.
"I did not expect this level of perfection," he said of the organization - about a third of the scale of a Summer Games - in his closing press conference at the Marina Bay Sands. "Hats off to Singapore for what they’ve done. I now have 22 Olympic Games under my belt and the YOG is ranking at the very top."
Youth Olympics Rhythm Gymnastics
The event, which caters to athletes aged between 14 and 18, has been championed by the Belgian since he became the Olympics chief in 2001. Competition in the 26 Olympic sports aside, it includes a simultaneous culture and education component.
The integration was one of many firsts of the Games. The world also witnessed a diving event held in the open at night and the use of laser shooting in the modern pentathlon for the first time. New formats like three-on-three basketball and mixed-team events in triathlon and swimming were also introduced. These adaptations, aimed at attracting a younger audience, drew praise from Rogge.
Youth Olympics Basketball
In a bid to reach out to youths, the Games also made its presence felt on YouTube and social networking sites. Rogge added that the media coverage had surpassed his expectations. The former Olympic sailor noted that 45,000 articles were written by some 1,200 journalists, and the YOG was broadcasted in 166 countries. In addition, a five-billion-strong audience watched YOG YouTube clips while four million people visited its Facebook page.
Another pleasing statistic: Of the 204 National Olympic Committees that were represented at the YOG, 98 will return with at least one medal. This is 12 more than in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and a sign of increased universality. “It is important that new countries win medals,” he said of new Olympic medallists like Jordan and Nauru.
Youth Olympics Tae Kwondo
Although the YOG has exceeded his expectations on all levels, Rogge said that there is room for improvement. He acknowledged that a number of countries did not send their top athletes to the Games - a scenario that is unlikely to be repeated at future YOG events. He promised: "It has been a big effort but we will not be complacent and we will learn from these Games and go forward from here."
Even though the Singapore Games are over, Singapore YOG organising committee chairman Ng Ser Miang confirmed that it made a lasting impact. "The YOG has deepened our sporting culture," he said. "For the young people and students, I think this has created a real opportunity for them to watch sports competition. I believe that many more youths will take up sports in the future and many more would want to compete for Singapore."

Singapore's spectacular closing ceremony was as inspiring as Beijing's Olympics 2008
DAZZLING FINISH TO THE
YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES
by Melvin Ryan Tan
"Time flies when you're having fun..." There couldn't be a more suitable idiom for today. 12 days of passion, excitement and jubilation at the inaugural Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games have come and gone. Indeed the close of the Games marked a poignant end to an extraordinary chapter in the Olympic legacy after two and a half years of intense preparations.
From the start, it has been like a dream that a tiny red dot like Singapore would be able to host such an international sporting event. But today, Singapore can proudly proclaim that it has made that dream a reality for 3,600 athletes from 204 countries. And like how a wise adage would go- "don't be sad that it ended, be happy that it happened", WhyOhGee hopes that everyone who has been part of this incredible journey will keep this memory in their hearts forever.
Thousands of illuminated hearts symbolized what the
Games meant to competitors and spectators alike

The spirit of Singapore will remain in happy memories for a long time to come
Competitiveness combined with camaraderie resulted in
an international success to be proud of
by Jonathan Wong
The vibrancy of youth and its power to inspire took centre stage for one final time at the closing ceremony of the first ever Youth Olympic Games, and it seemed only fitting that it was a 12-year-old girl, local singer Nathania Ong, who led the way with a rousing rendition of Singapore’s national anthem in front of 27,000 spectators. Looking resplendent in her silver dress which shimmered under the white floodlights, she was accompanied on the stage by a choir as the national flag was raised.
The 2010 Youth Olympics Logo
A video montage of the 12 days of competition gave the athletes, who filled the stage and filmed the proceedings with their digital cameras, the chance to relive memories of triumph and defeat. Medals were not the only theme of the three-minute clip. There were also many scenes of newly-formed friendships - rivals on the track embracing each other in a show of how sports can break down barriers.
Yet the occasion was not solely reserved for the 3,600 young people who took part in the competition. The efforts of the 20,000 volunteers were not forgotten. Singapore’s own 50m backstroke silver medallist Rainer Ng, representing all the athletes, paid tribute in a speech. Bouquets of flowers were also presented to eight representative volunteers as they soaked in a standing ovation from the crowd.
The skyline of Singapore bathed in fireworks
Not only was Singapore’s city skyline once again bathed in fireworks, 4 skillful performers suspended under hot air balloons also brought gasps from the audience. Once again at this very site along the waterfront, the highlight was the Youth Olympic Flame as the flugelhorn softly serenaded its gentle extinction under a cover of dim velvet lights.
It marked the end of the inaugural YOG but as the closing duet serenaded the crowd and the athletes with the words "We’re on our way", it was also a reminder of the future. Or as the video by the next host proclaimed, "See you in Nanjing".
