ENGLAND IS THE HOME OF MODERN FOOTBALL (AKA SOCCER), AND BRITISH AMBASSADOR STEPHEN LILLIE, speaking from the Embassy of the United Kingdom in Manila, gives a strong thumbs up to doing business in the Philippines. To avoid confusion, England is part of Great Britain which is part of the United Kingdom which is part of the European Union.
Therefore with reference to the 2011 Royal Wedding, Prince William and Princess Catherine are now second in line to be King and Queen of the United Kingdom - but not of the European Union, although millions of Europeans have publicly expressed the opinion that 'Will & Kate' also belong to them, as Will's ancestors came to Britain from from Germany and they have branches all over Europe.
Stephen Lillie does not discuss this issue and states that the Philippine population of 92 million makes us the 3rd English-speaking country of the world. He goes on to praise the international success of Philippine call-centers, whose clients include British blue-chip companies such as Shell, HKBC, and the Financial Times.
He says that our battle against corruption is being won, and the presence of more than 200 major British companies here signifies clearly that now is an excellent time for British and other European companies to invest in the Philippines.
Enthusiastic about the developing popularity of Filipino football and the inspiring progress of the Philippine Askals, most Englishmen everywhere look forward to seeing them qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, and they also hope that before then Filipino sports fans will join them in visiting the 2012 Olympics in London.

Forget the negative attitudes of stick-in-the-mud critics and do a Google search to see the creativity of Filipinos who have posted on the internet their own versions of DOT's inspiring
new tourism slogan. Who cares what the Swiss did in 1951? They didn't invent the English
language and they didn't coin the "it's more fun" phrase. Positive-thinking Filipinos like the
new slogan and are having lots of fun proving the truth in it. DOT deserves congratulations!

WE ARE VERY PROUD OF OUR
WORLD CHAMPION NEIGHBOR AND WISH HIM FURTHER SUCCESSES IN 2011!
There has never in history been a boxer like
him. Beating Antonio Margarito so conclusively in Texas, by the
unanimous decision of 3 judges, brought Pacman the WBC World Super
Welterweight title, and nobody has ever before been the World Champion
in eight different weight divisions. What a phenomenal athlete, and
what a tremendous inspiration he is to Filipinos around the globe.
Pacquiao's sportsmanship was such that in the final two rounds of the
match he clearly eased up to avoid handing out excessive
punishment to the bigger Mexican-American fighter, who was tough and
brave but totally outclassed. We are proud that Manny and his
family have a home in one of our local premier subdivisions. In his three careers of boxer, congressman, and entertainer, we wish him further successes in 2011! (See lots of great stuff
for Pacman fans on the Pacland website)

Pamela Peters-Baun keeps you in touch with events and activities at SM City Sta. Rosa
SiMultaneous Celebration of
National Children’s Book Day
DepEd District Superintendent Belen Manzanero (center) together with (from left to right)
SM Mall Manager Dominador Carińgal Jr., DepEd Science Supervisor Luhinia Ofren,
DepEd Filipino Supervisor Julie Panganuban, DepEd English Supervisor Cherry Taleon,
SM Marketing Manager Armind Cajala and SM Public Relations Officer Pamela Baun
during SM's visit to Ms. Manzanero to discuss SM's upcoming book reading activity.
SINCE 1967 INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN'S BOOK DAY (ICBD) is celebrated every April 2nd in time for the birthday of the world-famous Danish author of well-loved fairy tales and poems, Hans Christian Andersen. Said festivity is held yearly to inspire love of reading and to call attention to children’s books.
Locally, we celebrate National Children’s Book Day (NCBD) on the 3rd Tuesday of July, in commemoration of the publication of Dr. Jose Rizal’s “Ang Pagong at ang Matsing” (The Turtle and the Monkey) at the Trubner’s Oriental Record in London.
The SM Supermalls’ Corporate Social Responsibility program, SM Cares, through the SM Committee on Youth and Children’s Welfare, shall be celebrating Children’s Book Day on July 20 with a number of “activity-campaigns” simultaneously across 36 SM malls nationwide.
“With more than 2.8 million customers going to our malls daily, and approximately 1.2 million being children, we have put it upon ourselves to make our malls not just child-friendly, but more importantly, an avenue for a kid’s growth and learning,” enthused Dominador Carińgal Jr., the Mall Manager of SM City Sta. Rosa.
He continued: “SM is now beyond shopping, entertainment and leisure. It is now about taking affirmative action in our social responsibilities. It is about taking initiatives, to be instrumental in caring for children the best way we can.”
Together with partners from the Department of Education (DepEd), the National Book Development Board (NBDB), the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Vibal Publishing and SM Foundation, the NCBD hopes to cultivate a love for reading and inspire kids into reading early to further boost a child’s development. This shall be highlighted by a turnover of more than 35,000 brand new books to different public schools nationwide. At SM City Sta. Rosa, five (5) lucky public elementary schools will be recipients of 500 brand new books from SM Foundation as well as 120 books from Vibal Publishing House.
Primary objective of this SM Cares campaign, is for kids to have fun in learning, by experiencing the wonderful world of books through digital storytelling with celebrities, book mascot parade, literary exhibits, book donation drive, “writeshops” for children’s literature and many more activities that would reinforce a child’s rich and colorful imagination, instill proper values, and encourage children to explore and learn about other cultures.
For more information on the latest schedule of activities, please visit SM City Sta. Rosa or call the SCMC Administration office at tel. nos. (02) 901-2027 or (049) 534-9811.

SM conducts 5th Joint Tactical Inspection of Security Personnel
SM Sta. Rosa and SM Muntinlupa's honorable security guards.
COMPLETE CUSTOMER SERVICE has always been a main concern of SM Supermalls. Ever since the mall opened its first doors to millions of Filipinos, SM always strives to provide excellent customer service to its patrons.
A large part of customer service falls on the shoulders of their security personnel and it is because of this reason that every year, SM together with their security agencies, performs tactical inspections were security guards are rated in terms of their overall appearance (grooming) and snappiness. First aid kits, flashlights and night sticks are likewise inspected to ensure that shoppers entering SM malls will be properly assisted in times of need.
SM's Vice President for Engineering Engr. Antolin Paule.
Under the early morning rays of the sun last July 9, 2010, security personnel from SM City Santa Rosa and SM Hypermarket Muntinlupa marched to the beat of the drum as SM Vice President for Engineering Engr. Antolin Paule rated their every move. SM Vice President for Operations Glenn Ang, Regional Operations Manager Mary Anne King, CRS Division Managers Redentor Cruz and Almus Alabe, Ret. General Cesar Abella, Ret. Major Celso Oliquino, SM Sta. Rosa Mall Manager Dominador Caringal Jr. and SM Hypermarket Muntinlupa Assistant Mall Manager Jenny Colayco were likewise present during the event.

(3rd from left).

Being one of the malls' front liners, security people are the first ones who welcome shoppers as they enter the mall and the last one to bid them a safe trip home. In between, they are the ones whom shoppers ask for help and whose hand children hold when they are lost. This “human” side of security guards is often overlooked by shoppers because of the guards intimidating demeanor but this is the side that SM would like shoppers to be acquainted with.

recovered at SM's
parking area 4 to its owner Emmanuel Ramos (rightmost). With

CRS Supervisor Ramon Domingo (leftmost).
In related news, two lucky shoppers had the chance to experience first hand the integrity of SM Sta. Rosa's security personnel when lost personal belongings were safely returned to them. Both Roderick Perez of Muntinlupa City and Emmanuel Ramos of Bacoor, Cavite were at a loss for words as they repeatedly thanked security guards Arnel Ajero and Silvino Racca. Perez lost his wallet at the cinema area and was recovered by SG Ajero. The wallet contained atleast P4,000 in cash and some valuable IDs. Ramos on the other hand dropped his Nokia 3200, worth P8,000, at SM's parking area 4 and was recovered by SG Racca who immediately brought the cellphone to the Customer Relations Service (CRS) office were Ramos was able to claim it instantly.

Our readers in Sta. Rosa and around the world who are parents will immediately identify with the subject matter of this entertaining talk on video, courtesy of TED.com. In December 2006 Alisa Volkman and her husband Rufus Griscom co-founded Babble, a website for parents. As the VP of sales strategy and brand development Volkman oversees design, influences product development, and creates and sells custom ad programs, growing the site to attract more than 4 million parents a month in 2010. Griscom is CEO and he was co-founder of the pathbreaking Nerve.com in 1997 as the website’s editor and CEO. He grew Nerve Media into a profitable website and online dating business, in the process spinning off Spring Street Networks. He also serves as an advisor to several New York-based internet companies. Volkman and Griscom have three sons. At work, they try to keep their relationship low-key. "It’s in the elevator ride up to our offices that a transformation occurs," Griscom says. "We start the ride as a couple and end it as business."

VIDEO GAMES ARE GOOD FOR YOU (AND FOR THE WHOLE WORLD)
"This is my daughter. She's playing a computer game. She's only two years old, and
she's having a blast. So she's really the driving force behind the development of graphics
processing units. As long as kids are playing computer games, graphics is getting better
and better and better. So please go back home, tell your kids to play more games, because
that's what I need." - Professor Anders Ynnerman, Ph.D., Linköping University, Sweden
Far from their earlier image of fantasies that wasted kids' time and parents' money,
video games are now acknowledged as a powerful force for improving the
real world we live in. Here's a selection of innovative thinkers and

HOW SCIENCE IS TRANSFORMING NATIONS AND PEOPLE FASTER THAN SCIENCE FICTION WRITERS COULD EVER HAVE PREDICTED
"Our greatest natural resource is the minds of our children... All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them... The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing... It's kind of fun to do the impossible."
- Walt Disney
"What is an airplane after all but a circling of reality, an approach to gravity which says: Look, with my magic machine I defy you. Gravity, be gone. Distance, stand aside. Time, stand still, or reverse, as I finally outrace the sun around the world in, by God! look! plane/jet/rocket--80 minutes!" - Ray Bradbury, award-winning author of bestselling SF novels including 'Fahrenheit 451' and 'Dandelion Wine', several of which were produced as Hollywood box office blockbuster hit movies.
We all know that airplanes, submarines, space travel, cell phones, holograms, transplants, cloning, foods in tablet form and many other things were described in science fiction long before they became reality. Even present day security cameras and television's Big Brother show were spawned by the SF novel "1984" written by George Orwell and first published in 1949. New ideas and discoveries are now communicated so widely and rapidly in what is often dubbed the Information Age that scientific developments are overtaking fiction in the current real-life race to create a modern real-world utopian society.
