MARKETING GOES MALLING
AS SM MARKETMALL OPENS
IN DASMARINAS, CAVITE

santa rosa laguna
Cavite Congressman Pidi Barzaga and Vice Governor Recto Cantimbuan share honors at the Marketmall’s opening ceremonies together with Mrs. Felicidad Sy and SM Food Retail President Herbert Sy. Also in photo are officiating Priest Reverend Father Leoben Peregrino, SM Prime Holdings’s Hans Christian Sy, Jr., SM Supermalls President Annie Garcia, and SM Hypermarket President Robert Kwee.

AN INNOVATIVE NEW SHOPPING CONCEPT RECEIVED A WARM AND ENTHUSIASTIC WELCOME from residents of the City of Dasmariñas, Cavite, when SM Marketmall opened its doors to the public.
In the SM tradition, SM executives led by SM Food Retail President Herbert Sy personally greeted the first wave of shoppers, as the eager and excited crowds quickly packed this mall of firsts.
This 5-storey, more than 10,000 square meter Marketmall is the first public-private partnership between a City Government and SM Prime Holdings, and is envisioned to be a destination for foodies in search for fresh products and homegrown cuisine.
It is housed in a modern, well lighted and well ventilated building, is open 24 hours, and is the first vertical wet market development with a Hypermarket, 1,073 wet and dry market stalls, restaurants, services, and a bagsakan area. Shopping in the Marketmall is easy, because the stainless steel stalls in the wet and dry areas are properly zoned and color-coded.
And then, there is the convenience of the multi-level parking area with provisions for 252 vehicles, as well as accessible transportation for commuters.
During opening day, customers had a glimpse of Cavite’s homegrown food offerings at the Tiendas de Dasmariñas where foods like the famous Imus Kutsinta, Tinapang Salinas, Seaweed Crackers, Gatas ng General Trias, Cafe Amadeo, Paella Negra, Marinara, and other Cavite products were showcased.
Earlier in the day, no less than Cavite Vice Governor Recto Cantimbuhan, Dasmariñas City Congressman Pidi Barzaga, and Dasmariñas City Mayor Jenny Barzaga shared honors in the ribbon cutting ceremonies with Mrs. Felicidad Sy and SM Food Retail President Herbert Sy.
SM Prime Holdings’ Hans Christian Sy, Jr., SM Hypermarket's Robert Kwee, SM Supermalls President Annie Garcia, and Reverend Father Leoben Peregrino also joined them.

Located along Dasmariñas Bagong Bayan Congressional Road, Dasmariñas, City, Cavite, the SM Marketmall serves customers from Dasmariñas City and nearby towns such as Imus, GMA, Carmona, General Trias and even some part of Trece Martirez City.
Apart from the SM Hypermarket and the wet and dry market, it also has food tenants like Jollibee, Mang Inasal, and Chowking; as well as services like BDO, Test Point, Mr. Quickie, Dermcare, LBC, Inkrite, APD Travel, M. H Burton, A-1 Driving and Lucky Circle.
The SM Marketmall is not only clean, well maintained, and secure, but also has PWD friendly facilities. Furthermore, it showcases environmentally sustainable practices with a sewage treatment plant that recycles water, and also has proper garbage segregation and disposal.
The SM Marketmall’s design and construction team includes Jose Siao Ling and Associates, Architects and Designers; and R. M. Cabanela Construction and ManagementCorp, General Contractor.

THE UNITED KINGDOM BACKS THE PHILIPPINES

ENGLAND IS THE HOME OF MODERN FOOTBALL (AKA SOCCER), AND BRITISH AMBASSADOR STEPHEN LILLIE, speaking from the Embassy of the United Kingdom in Manila, gives a strong thumbs up to doing business in the Philippines. To avoid confusion, England is part of Great Britain which is part of the United Kingdom which is part of the European Union.
Therefore with reference to the 2011 Royal Wedding, Prince William and Princess Catherine are now second in line to be King and Queen of the United Kingdom - but not of the European Union, although millions of Europeans have publicly expressed the opinion that 'Will & Kate' also belong to them, as Will's ancestors came to Britain from from Germany and they have branches all over Europe.
Stephen Lillie does not discuss this issue and states that the Philippine population of 92 million makes us the 3rd English-speaking country of the world. He goes on to praise the international success of Philippine call-centers, whose clients include British blue-chip companies such as Shell, HKBC, and the Financial Times.
He says that our battle against corruption is being won, and the presence of more than 200 major British companies here signifies clearly that now is an excellent time for British and other European companies to invest in the Philippines.
Enthusiastic about the developing popularity of Filipino football and the inspiring progress of the Philippine Askals, most Englishmen everywhere look forward to seeing them qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, and they also hope that before then Filipino sports fans will join them in visiting the 2012 Olympics in London.

Forget the negative attitudes of stick-in-the-mud critics and do a Google search to see the
creativity of Filipinos who have posted on the internet their own versions of DOT's inspiring
new tourism slogan. Who cares what the Swiss did in 1951? They didn't invent the English
language and they didn't coin the "it's more fun" phrase. Positive-thinking Filipinos like the
new slogan and are having lots of fun proving the truth in it. DOT deserves congratulations!

MY CITY, MY SM, MY CUISINE IS
LAUNCHED AT SANTA ROSA

santa rosa laguna
Clockwise: Exhibit curator Nonie Cartagena with judges Claude Tayag, Micky Fenix,
Cora Alvina, Sonny Tinio and Grace Laurel.

Story by Pamela Peters-Baun

GOOD FOOD AND GREAT PEOPLE WERE AT THE MY CITY, MY SM, MY CUISINE LAUNCH! It was an afternoon of gastronomic surprises as the initial leg of this nationwide contest was launched in SM City Santa Rosa.
Mall shoppers’ palates were teased as they were greeted with the aroma of home-made cooking as five contestants vied for the title of concocting the best Chicken Puchero with La Oya this side of the archipelago, while five other contestants competed to win the hearts, and stomachs, of the judges for the best Puto Maya with Kilawing Puso ng Saging.
Food magazine editor-in-chief Micky Fenix and renowned writer Sonny Tiñio Jr. headed the impressive panel of judges, which included well-known artist and foodie Claude Tayag, Metropolitan Museum Vice-Chair Corazon Alvina, Philippine Star columnist Grace Laurel, and SM Homeworld’s Department Manager Merly Ann Bernaldez. Tayag was one of the honorees during last year’s My City, My SM in Clark, Pampanga.

santa rosa laguna
Winner for the Best Puchero with La Oya: Pepito Panganiban.

They had a hard time deciding who to give their nod to, as evidenced by the time it took them relishing every bite of the prepared entries. As all contests go, only one emerges as champion, and after scores were tallied, the ownership of making the best Puchero with La Oya went to family cook Pepito Panganiban while Nelia Dia, an unassuming housewife from Brgy. Malusak in Sta. Rosa, claimed the title for making the best Puto Maya with Kilawing Puso ng Saging.

Winner for the Best Puto Maya with Kilawing Puso ng Saging: Nelia Dia.

An awarding ceremony immediately followed the cook out, with Sta. Rosa City Mayor Arlene Arcillas, City Councilor Edward Tiongco and Sta. Rosa City Tourism Officer Nescy Esguerra gracing the event. My City, My SM honorees such as Tatler Editor Chit Lijauco and renowned make up artist James Cooper were likewise present during the occasion.

santa rosa laguna
The awards were presented by local dignitaries (from Left): Councilor Edward Tiongco, City Mayor Arlene Arcillas-Nazareno, and City Tourism Officer Nescy Esguerra.

A major highlight of the event was a video featuring the diverse culinary delights found in Sta. Rosa made more interesting by a cooking demo hosted by Corazon Alvina which featured Chit Lijauco and Nonia Tiongco, Director of the Sta. Rosa Studies Center, showing the guests how to cook Sta. Rosa heirloom dishes. Old fashioned Sta. Rosa hospitality was evident during the occasion as old families of Sta. Rosa shared to guests their families’ secret heirloom recipes by bringing prepared versions of these.
My City, My SM, My Cuisine is SM’s contribution to ensure the survival of Philippine food stories, by identifying and preserving traditional recipes and culinary techniques.
Food enthusiasts can look forward to the succeeding stops of My City, My SM, My Cuisine happening in Lucena in May and Cavite in June, Batangas in July, Cagayan de Oro and Davao in August, Marilao and Naga in September, Bacolod in October, Pampanga in December, Cebu and Iloilo in January and Baguio and Clark in February.

"Their sacrifice has, in one way or another, been our economic saving grace for several years now", she said.

Each Global Pinoy Center is a specialized all-in-one convenience stop, an enclosure within SM Supermalls that will render services to address the needs of OFWs such as Information and Directory assistance and OFW related concerns including travel & leisure guides. Members will likewise be accommodated in a comfortable lounge with free drinks, a mobile charging station, an exclusive ATM machine and exclusive Foreign Exchange & Remittance counter.

The Centers also provide free Internet use for ease in communication, and with the latest technology being provided by project partner Abot Tanaw, members will be able to enjoy conversing with their loved ones abroad using a FREE Hub to Hub Video conferencing.

Likewise the Global Pinoy Center program will spearhead and collaborate with main agencies of the Government like POEA, OWWA, the Department Of Tourism and other core groups for monthly themed caravans and programs that will touch on livelihood, skills and development trainings as well as legal, entrepreneurial and one-on-one investment consultations. Banco de Oro shall also play a big role in helping overseas kababayans with investment opportunities.

The Global Pinoy Center at SM City Santa Rosa is open to all Overseas Filipino Workers and their families for a minimal membership fee of P150 valid for one year. It is located at the Ground Floor, right beside Banco de Oro.

Members will enjoy the added advantage of great value and rewards with the Global Pinoy Perks Booklet, where freebies and discounts from thousands of stores across SM Supermalls nationwide can be availed.

VIDEO GAMES ARE
GOOD FOR YOU

(AND FOR THE WHOLE WORLD)

"This is my daughter. She's playing a computer game. She's only two years old, and
she's having a blast. So she's really the driving force behind the development of graphics
processing units. As long as kids are playing computer games, graphics is getting better
and better and better. So please go back home, tell your kids to play more games, because
that's what I need." - Professor Anders Ynnerman, Ph.D., Linköping University, Sweden

Far from their earlier image of fantasies that wasted kids' time and parents' money,
video games are now acknowledged as a powerful force for improving the
real world we live in. Here's a selection of innovative thinkers and
doers who will open your minds to amazing new possibilities.

HOW SCIENCE IS TRANSFORMING NATIONS AND PEOPLE FASTER THAN SCIENCE FICTION WRITERS COULD EVER HAVE PREDICTED

"Our greatest natural resource is the minds of our children... All our dreams can come true
if we have the courage to pursue them... The way to get started is to quit talking and begin
doing... It's kind of fun to do the impossible."
- Walt Disney

"What is an airplane after all but a circling of reality, an approach to gravity which says: Look, with my magic machine I defy you. Gravity, be gone. Distance, stand aside. Time, stand still, or reverse, as I finally outrace the sun around the world in, by God! look! plane/jet/rocket--80 minutes!"
- Ray Bradbury, award-winning author of bestselling SF novels including 'Fahrenheit 451' and 'Dandelion Wine', several of which were produced as Hollywood box office blockbuster hit movies.

We all know that airplanes, submarines, space travel, cell phones, holograms, transplants, cloning, foods in tablet form and many other things were described in science fiction long before they became reality. Even present day security cameras and television's Big Brother show were spawned by the SF novel "1984" written by George Orwell and first published in 1949. New ideas and discoveries are now communicated so widely and rapidly in what is often dubbed the Information Age that scientific developments are overtaking fiction in the current real-life race to create a modern real-world utopian society.
