SiMultaneous Celebration of
National Children’s Book Day

DepEd District Superintendent Belen Manzanero (center) together with (from left to right)
SM Mall Manager Dominador Carińgal Jr., DepEd Science Supervisor Luhinia Ofren,
DepEd Filipino Supervisor Julie Panganuban, DepEd English Supervisor Cherry Taleon,
SM Marketing Manager Armind Cajala and SM Public Relations Officer Pamela Baun
during SM's visit to Ms. Manzanero to discuss SM's upcoming book reading activity.
SINCE 1967 INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN'S BOOK DAY (ICBD) is celebrated every April 2nd in time for the birthday of the world-famous Danish author of well-loved fairy tales and poems, Hans Christian Andersen. Said festivity is held yearly to inspire love of reading and to call attention to children’s books.
Locally, we celebrate National Children’s Book Day (NCBD) on the 3rd Tuesday of July, in commemoration of the publication of Dr. Jose Rizal’s “Ang Pagong at ang Matsing” (The Turtle and the Monkey) at the Trubner’s Oriental Record in London.
The SM Supermalls’ Corporate Social Responsibility program, SM Cares, through the SM Committee on Youth and Children’s Welfare, shall be celebrating Children’s Book Day on July 20 with a number of “activity-campaigns” simultaneously across 36 SM malls nationwide.
“With more than 2.8 million customers going to our malls daily, and approximately 1.2 million being children, we have put it upon ourselves to make our malls not just child-friendly, but more importantly, an avenue for a kid’s growth and learning,” enthused Dominador Carińgal Jr., the Mall Manager of SM City Sta. Rosa.
He continued: “SM is now beyond shopping, entertainment and leisure. It is now about taking affirmative action in our social responsibilities. It is about taking initiatives, to be instrumental in caring for children the best way we can.”
Together with partners from the Department of Education (DepEd), the National Book Development Board (NBDB), the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Vibal Publishing and SM Foundation, the NCBD hopes to cultivate a love for reading and inspire kids into reading early to further boost a child’s development. This shall be highlighted by a turnover of more than 35,000 brand new books to different public schools nationwide. At SM City Sta. Rosa, five (5) lucky public elementary schools will be recipients of 500 brand new books from SM Foundation as well as 120 books from Vibal Publishing House.
Primary objective of this SM Cares campaign, is for kids to have fun in learning, by experiencing the wonderful world of books through digital storytelling with celebrities, book mascot parade, literary exhibits, book donation drive, “writeshops” for children’s literature and many more activities that would reinforce a child’s rich and colorful imagination, instill proper values, and encourage children to explore and learn about other cultures.
For more information on the latest schedule of activities, please visit SM City Sta. Rosa or call the SCMC Administration office at tel. nos. (02) 901-2027 or (049) 534-9811.

SM conducts 5th Joint Tactical Inspection of Security Personnel

SM Sta. Rosa and SM Muntinlupa's honorable security guards.
COMPLETE CUSTOMER SERVICE has always been a main concern of SM Supermalls. Ever since the mall opened its first doors to millions of Filipinos, SM always strives to provide excellent customer service to its patrons.
A large part of customer service falls on the shoulders of their security personnel and it is because of this reason that every year, SM together with their security agencies, performs tactical inspections were security guards are rated in terms of their overall appearance (grooming) and snappiness. First aid kits, flashlights and night sticks are likewise inspected to ensure that shoppers entering SM malls will be properly assisted in times of need.

Under the early morning rays of the sun last July 9, 2010, security personnel from SM City Santa Rosa and SM Hypermarket Muntinlupa marched to the beat of the drum as SM Vice President for Engineering Engr. Antolin Paule rated their every move. SM Vice President for Operations Glenn Ang, Regional Operations Manager Mary Anne King, CRS Division Managers Redentor Cruz and Almus Alabe, Ret. General Cesar Abella, Ret. Major Celso Oliquino, SM Sta. Rosa Mall Manager Dominador Caringal Jr. and SM Hypermarket Muntinlupa Assistant Mall Manager Jenny Colayco were likewise present during the event.

Being one of the malls' front liners, security people are the first ones who welcome shoppers as they enter the mall and the last one to bid them a safe trip home. In between, they are the ones whom shoppers ask for help and whose hand children hold when they are lost. This “human” side of security guards is often overlooked by shoppers because of the guards intimidating demeanor but this is the side that SM would like shoppers to be acquainted with.

recovered at SM's
parking area 4 to its owner Emmanuel Ramos (rightmost). With

In related news, two lucky shoppers had the chance to experience first hand the integrity of SM Sta. Rosa's security personnel when lost personal belongings were safely returned to them. Both Roderick Perez of Muntinlupa City and Emmanuel Ramos of Bacoor, Cavite were at a loss for words as they repeatedly thanked security guards Arnel Ajero and Silvino Racca. Perez lost his wallet at the cinema area and was recovered by SG Ajero. The wallet contained atleast P4,000 in cash and some valuable IDs. Ramos on the other hand dropped his Nokia 3200, worth P8,000, at SM's parking area 4 and was recovered by SG Racca who immediately brought the cellphone to the Customer Relations Service (CRS) office were Ramos was able to claim it instantly.
